Updated: Jul 11

Nestled 90 km northwest of Lisbon, Peniche is a charming coastal town renowned for its rich blend of fishing traditions and vibrant surfing culture. Home to the iconic Supertubos beach and the annual World Surf League competition, Peniche attracts surfers from around the globe. The town's proximity to the Berlengas archipelago offers unique opportunities for marine exploration, while its historic sites, such as the Peniche Fortaleza, provide glimpses into Portugal's past. From bustling fish markets to quaint seafood restaurants, Peniche delights visitors with its fresh catches and local cuisine. Just a short drive away lies the medieval town of Óbidos, famous for its well-preserved architecture and the spectacular medieval festival held annually in July.

Visitors to Peniche can easily spend three days exploring its surf spots, historical sites, and culinary delights, or extend their stay to immerse themselves in Portuguese culture and learn to surf. Let’s deep dive into my recommendations for your visit to Peniche!

MUSEU NACIONAL RESISTENCIA E LIBERDADE (Fortaleza de Peniche):

During my recent visit to the National Museum for Resistance and Freedom in Peniche, I was captivated by the immersive experience that awaited me. After being closed for an extensive period for restoration and upgrades, the museum had undergone a remarkable transformation that exceeded all my expectations. As I purchased my ticket for 8 euros at the ticket office, I was filled with anticipation for what lay ahead. Stepping inside, I was transported into a world of poignant exhibits and displays that vividly depicted Portugal's enduring struggle for freedom and democracy. The museum's carefully curated collection shed light on the courageous acts of resistance and the sacrifices made by those who fought for liberty. The renovation had not only revitalized the museum's physical space but also deepened its historical significance, offering a profound insight into the country's tumultuous past. A visit to this museum is not just a journey through history but a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

MUSEU DA RENDA DE BILROS DE PENICHE:

Peniche boasts a rich tradition of lace making (renda de bilros), with skilled artisans creating intricate and delicate lacework that is a testament to the town's cultural heritage. Visitors can explore local lace shops and workshops to witness the meticulous craftsmanship firsthand and purchase unique lace souvenirs. For a deeper dive into the art of lace making, a visit to the Museu da Renda de Bilros de Peniche offers the opportunity to watch the lace makers in action, showcasing their expertise and preserving this time-honored craft. OBIDOS MEDIEVAL VILLAGE (20 min drive):

Óbidos, a picturesque town in Portugal, is a charming destination that captivates visitors with its medieval charm and rich history. Enclosed within ancient castle walls, Óbidos exudes a fairy-tale atmosphere, making it a popular spot for tourists seeking a step back in time. The town is renowned for hosting one of the best medieval festivals in Portugal every July, where the streets come alive with colorful parades, music, and traditional performances. Óbidos is also famous for its ginjinha, a sweet cherry liqueur, best enjoyed in chocolate cups—a delightful treat for visitors to sample. LOCAL MARKET:

The fish and vegetable market is a bustling hub of activity where locals and visitors alike can immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of this traditional marketplace. With a history dating back to its origins as a vital center for trade and commerce, the market continues to be a focal point of the community, offering a wide array of fresh seafood, fruits, vegetables, and other local products. Saturday is a particularly lively day at the market, as vendors gather to sell an assortment of goods, including bread, cheeses, dried fruits, nuts, flowers, and meats from local butchers. The market not only provides a place to shop for fresh ingredients but also serves as a social gathering spot where residents come together to exchange goods, stories, and culinary traditions. Make sure to bring cash!

WHERE TO STAY:

There aren’t a lot of big hotels here which in my opinion is good, I always opt for local accommodation like Airbnbs, we happen to have 2 located in Peniche, one that is close to the main surfing beach and one located in the historic centre. You can have a look and book through the links here.

If you enjoy the hotel or lodging with breakfast here are my recommendations:

2.    Mercearia B&B

3.    MH hotel

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK:

Here are my top recommendations for restaurants, cafes, and places for a drink – I've handpicked my favorites because you don't have time for a mediocre meal or experience.

RESTAURANTS:

1.    TASCA DO JOEL- Absolutely a must try, when we send clients here, we are often here it’s one of the best meals they have had in Portugal. Great food, great service, authentic dishes done to perfection-I recommend making a reservation in advance on their website www.tascadojoel.pt

2.    MARGINAL RESTAURANT-This is your spot for a sunset dinner, you have views of the Berlengas and the ocean. Food here is amazing, authentic, and fresh. Highly recommend booking a reservation at this number 96890748.

3.    RESTAURANT NAU- Another amazing spot for delicious traditional food done right! You won’t be disappointed.

CAFES:

1.        Puro Cake LAB- serves up some nice coffee and cakes, sit out on the terrace and enjoy a coffee and cake.

2.        Café do Parque- Great little café that serves up coffee, ice cream, breakfast, lunch all while your kids play at the park, they often have inflatables to play on as well, nice setting, nice break- we have a son, we love it here!

3.        Cale- they offer some treats that are specific to Peniche, nice little café, also get some delicious bread here as well.

BEACH BARS:

1.        TRIBO BAR AND BAR DO BRUNO: If you have a car, bike or don’t mind a 45minute walk down the beach, these bars have a great atmosphere and often have a dj playing, they are a perfect place for a post surf cocktail or to watch the sunset.

2.        GAMBOA BAR: you can sit out on the chairs in the sand and watch the surfers in action, they will often have live music happening as well on the weekends.

3.        BAR DO QUEBRADO: this is a locals hangout spot, more authentic, check out inside what the light fixtures are made of….

 BARS:

1.        EH CARAPAU: this is a new concept In Peniche, it is canned fish done in tapas style, local cheeses, and simple tapas, the décor is cool, and you can sit out front and have your food and drink on top of a superbock keg.

2.        TRES AS BAR: been around as a staple in Peniche for many years, the interior has character and history, fishing culture meets vintage- a must try.

3.        JAVA HOUSE- right next to TRES AS bar, more upscale, nice décor, bar and lounge atmosphere, also very nice.

MY TIPS WHEN VISITING PENICHE:

1.        Have cash on you, a lot of places won’t have card machines, there are loads of ATM machines around Peniche but it’s nothing worse than going to pay and not having cash on hand.

2.        Book your accommodation, tours, lessons, and other activities in advance when coming between June-October. It gets busy here and you wouldn’t want to be

3.        You can access Peniche by bus or car, there are not any trains that come directly to Peniche. BUS (flixbus & rede expresso)

4.        Use the walkways & boardwalks-Respect the dunes- they are protected and are vital to Peniche.

5.        It can be a little windy in Peniche, pack a light sweater with you when venturing out.
